Networks

I am a member of several international scholarly networks.
In the past two decades, there has been a world-wide resurgence of discourses that define the people in terms of their unique civilizational identity and call for states to refurbish their timeless civilizational glory. These discourses, or “new civilizationisms,” both draw on and react against an older, Enlightenment-inspired, and Eurocentric notion of civilization. This international research network sets out to map the overlapping ecosystems of new civilizationism.
Inherit-Heritage in Transformation
This research center addresses historical, contemporary and possible future transformations in heritage. It seeks to develop innovative and cutting-edge research by working across arts, humanities, and the social sciences. Some of the guiding questions are: How were relations between past, present and future understood, performed and materialized at different times and places? In what ways do global and local transformations reshape what is seen as valuable to keep for the future? What are the social, political, and environmental potentials of changing understandings and forms of heritage?
In 2024, I was selected as a residential fellow under the “Decentering the West” research cluster.
Islamic Political Thought in Turkey
This project examines the current Islamic intellectual field in Turkey that consists of hundreds of journals, publishers, bookstores, research institutes, and since 2010, universities. The research focuses on political and intellectual periodicals published to discern and categorize different Islam-based intellectual movements, ideologies, and schools of thought.
1980s International Research Network
Since January 2023, our international network has shared research and identified potential areas of collaboration. We are a group of scholars from all academic disciplines and career stages. Areas of interest include, but are by no means restricted to, the following aspects of the 1980s: media, literature, politics, gender, race and migration, religion, art and fashion, emotions, and retro/nostalgia/reimagination of the 1980s.
